Muscle Milk by CytoSport: 2010 Best in Class Product Review
For over a decade, elite athletes and bodybuilders worldwide have relied on the acclaimed ProSource Best-In-Class supplement awards as a path to the industry’s most effective products. In our 2010 online customer survey, Muscle Milk was voted the Best in Class Winner in the Premium Proteins category. It was selected #1 in its class based exclusively on ProSource customer votes. Unlike other sites, the winners are not selected based on sales or any input from the company itself. Simply put, these awards represent the most independent and unbiased in the industry.
The winner and runner-up were chosen by customers from the following selection of nominated finalists in this category: NytroWhey Ultra (ProSource) • Nitro-Tech Hardcore (MuscleTech) • Supreme Protein Powder • Vectron (ProSource) • NytroPlex (ProSource) • MyoFusion (Gaspari) • 100% Gold Standard (Optimum) • Muscle Milk (CytoSport). Congratulations to Muscle Milk, Vectron and all the nominees participating in the Best In Class Customer Survey.
Muscle Milk’s niche in the crowded protein market has long been defined by its strategy of mimicking the content and function of human mother’s milk. As such, it is augmented with significant healthy fat content, in the form of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and longer-chain polyunsaturated fats. MCT content is important as ongoing research suggests that this predigested, trans-fat free energy source is more likely to be metabolized for muscle energy and heat than stored as fat. Muscle Milk also contains good-quality fatty acids from sunflower/ safflower and canola oils.
Muscle Milk’s protein content, trade named EvoPro™, has long been appreciated by dedicated bodybuilders. EvoPro in Muscle Milk contains a well-rounded mix of bioavailable proteins for sustained energy, including calcium and sodium caseinate, milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, whey peptides, lactoferrin, L-glutamine, and taurine. Clearly, this protein blend is designed to emphasize medium-to-slow uptake, with glutamine incorporated to combat post-workout muscle breakdown. One concern however is about a year ago, they eliminated the higher grade micellar casein protein in this formula. Not sure if it was a money-saving move, but troubling nonetheless. Finally, Muscle Milk contains significant carb content in the form of starch-based complex carbs (defined as “resistant maltodextrin” on the label) which are intended to supply energy to the body in the form of glucose, as well as a vitamin and mineral blend that covers vitamins A, C, D, E and the family of B vitamins, along with calcium, iron, phosphorous, iodine, magnesium, zinc, copper, chromium, sodium and potassium.
CytoSport’s Muscle Milk protein formulation has been around a long time and has certainly generated a solid amount of customer goodwill over those years. Its somewhat elevated fat and carb profile, along with its 32 grams of protein per serving, has long made it a favorite of bodybuilders looking to add weight.
